Opening Ceremony Speech By Mr Ng Ser Miang, Chairman, SYOGOC
14 Aug 2010
BONSOIR, BIENVENUE A SINGAPOUR
The President of the Republic of Singapore, Mr S.R. Nathan,
The President of the International Olympic Committee, Mr Jacques Rogge,
The Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore, Mr Lee Hsien Loong,
Royal Highnesses,
Excellencies,
My IOC Colleagues,
Members of the Olympic family,
Young Olympians,
My fellow Singaporeans,
Ladies and gentlemen,
Good evening, it is a great honour and privilege for me to stand before you and to warmly welcome you to the Opening Ceremony of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games.
Tonight, we witness the birth of the Youth Olympic Games and share with the world this historic moment. Tonight, we welcome 3,600 Young Olympians to Singapore; and over the next 12 days we will witness these outstanding talents from the 204 National Olympic Committees compete in 26 Olympic sports.
The Young Olympians will compete against each other in sports and they will also come together to take part in the Culture and Education Programme as friends and partners. The IOC has envisaged the Culture and Education Programme as a defining element of the Youth Olympic Games, differentiating it from other Games.
Through the programme, the Young Olympians will take part in activities and discussions on global and social issues as well as learn how they can make a positive impact in their community. Most importantly, we hope that they will build strong and abiding bonds of friendship, and learn that the power of sports and the ideals of the Olympic values can help us build a more united and peaceful world.
President Rogge and my dear IOC colleagues, thank you for your vision and for your gift to the youth of the world. Thank you for these Games that will change lives and imbue the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect. Thank you for entrusting this exciting challenge to Singapore.
My friends and colleagues at the International Federations and National Olympic Committees, thank you for your close collaboration. Together with the IOC, we have co-constructed this very first Youth Olympic Games in these short and eventful two and a half years. We could not have done it without you.
On behalf of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee, I will like to thank our Prime Minister Mr Lee Hsien Loong and the Government of Singapore for the wholehearted support they have given to these Games.
To my fellow citizens, thank you for the concerted effort from the whole of Singapore. More than 20,000 have volunteered their services directly to the Games, and many thousands more have offered their support in many other ways. I call upon all Singaporeans to be gracious hosts and to create a meaningful and memorable experience for our all guests.
Friends from all over the world, just 5 days ago on August 9th, Singapore celebrated the 45th Anniversary of her Independence. In the course of our history, we have come through many trials and tribulations, growing from a small fishing village 200 years ago to the Singapore of today. We are proud of our country and what we have achieved together. There are so many things to do, to see and to explore in Singapore. To our overseas guests I wish you a pleasant and memorable stay.
Thank you all for joining us in this exciting journey. Let us celebrate and enjoy the Youth Olympic Games and live the Olympic Values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect.
Thank you. Merci beaucoup.
Now, I have the honour to invite Mr Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, to deliver his address. Mr President, please.

Opening Ceremony Speech By President Jacques Rogge, President, IOC
15 Aug 2010
Dear Singapore Friends,
Tonight, we open a new chapter in the history of the Olympic Movement. From this moment on, young people around the world have a chance to participate in a global forum that combines sport, education and culture.
We are indebted to the people of Singapore for your great hospitality and your remarkable efforts in staging these inaugural Youth Olympic Games.
I thank in particular the wonderful volunteers, without whom nothing would be possible. You are the true heroes of these games.
I also thank all our partners in the Olympic Movement who believed in the idea and supported it.
Dear athletes,
We are happy to welcome you to the first Youth Olympic Games, here in Singapore. You are our future, and we want to help you take that future into your own hands.
Dear athletes,
This evening marks your entry into the Olympic world. Over the next 12 days, you will compete with the world’s best athletes of your generation. You will test the limits of your abilities and push past them. Many of you will compete at future Olympic Games. All of you will benefit from these Youth Games.
Your experiences here will help you prepare for life beyond the field of play. You will share the wonderful atmosphere of the Olympic Village. You will gain a deeper appreciation of Olympic values. You will acquire knowledge and life skills through our culture and education programme.
You will learn the difference between winning and being a champion. To win, you merely have to cross the finish line first. To be a champion, you have to inspire admiration for your character, as well as for your physical talent. You have to compete in spirit of fair play, respecting your opponents and the rules — without doping or any other unfair advantage.
If you can reach that pinnacle, if you are ready to serve as role models for your generation, you will all be champions, irrespective of your rankings.
Thank you and have fun!

Mr Lee Hsien Loong, Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore,
Mr Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee,
Friends and Colleagues,
Ladies and gentlemen,
We have done it!!
We have delivered the inaugural Youth Olympic Games!!!
Young Olympians, for the last 12 days you have breathed life into this very first Youth Olympic Games. You epitomize the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect. Your spectacular performances in sport and your enthusiastic participation in the Culture and Education Programme have proved that the concept of the Youth Olympic Games is a right one. You have wowed us and inspired us and we have cheered our hearts out for you. The integration of sports with culture and education and the buzz of these Games have been magical. Thank you Chefs de Mission, team officials, coaches and Athlete Role Models for your support to the Young Olympians and helping to make these Games such an exciting experience for everyone.
The journey for the last 2 ½ years has been exhilarating and fulfilling. Thank you friends and colleagues at the International Olympic Committee, the National Olympic Committees and the International Federations for working hand in hand with us to co-construct and co-create these Games.
Thank you, President Jacques Rogge for your vision. This is the legacy of your presidency.
My fellow Singaporeans, we have worked hard together to host the world. We have fulfilled our promises and undertakings and made Singapore proud. Thank You, Terima Kasih, Xie Xie, Mi Ker Nandri.
To the Government of Singapore and especially our Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, thank you for being with us from the very beginning, the first day of our bid. You stood with us on 21 February 2008 at Padang of our City Hall, awaiting for the announcement of the host city, and you have been with us through the Games. The world would not have come to Singapore if you had not said, “Yes, let us bid for the Games”. Thank you, Prime Minister.
To our team at the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee and the thousands of volunteers, what can I say to you? From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your passion and your total devotion. This is a dream come true for many of us. So dear friends, wherever you are, please stand up, take a bow and be recognised.
Friends from the media of the world, many of you have told me that you have never worked so hard before at any Games because there are so many stories to tell at these Games. Thank you for bringing these many exciting moments to the world through the images and writings and stories of these Games, of the triumphs and struggles of the Young Olympians, and of the many touching human stories. You have worked tirelessly to convey truthfully and beautifully the spirit of this very first Games.
These Games have touched many and will change the lives of many more. I am very privileged to be able to blaze the trail together with you, to create history and to leave a strong legacy for the world and for Singapore.
To my friends at Innsbruck and Nanjing, good luck to you and we will be there always to support you. May the Flame of the Youth Olympic Games burn ever brighter at your Games.
It is now time to say goodbye. I hope you will leave Singapore with great memories of both this Games and Singapore. Merci bien, au revoir et bon voyage.
Now, it is my privilege and honour to invite Mr Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, to deliver his speech.

Singapore 2010 Closing Ceremony Speech by IOC President, Jacques Rogge
26 August 2010
Congratulations and thank you, Singapore, for a job superbly done.
You rose brilliantly to the challenge of combining elite sport, modern education and culture.
Throughout these 12 days, we all enjoyed the warm hospitality of the public authorities, of the very successful Organising Committee and of the 20,000 wonderful volunteers.
These Games will leave a great human legacy in Singapore and around the world.
These Games were full of innovation, creativity, joy and a sharing of Olympic values.
Dear athletes, you made us proud.
You have learnt what it means to be a true champion, not simply a winner.
You have shown us that a new generation is ready to embrace and share Olympic values.
You thrilled us with your splendid performances. But, more than that, you inspired us with your enthusiasm, your spirit and the sheer joy you brought to the task of competing, learning and living with fellow athletes from around the world.
These were truly inspirational games.
Dear athletes, you have now earned the title Young Olympian.
And when, years from now, you reflect on your sports career, you will be able to say: “I was in Singapore, where it all began.”
The Youth Olympic Flame will go out tonight, but the spirit of Singapore will remain.
The International Olympic Committee will continue to promote this spirit at the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria, and at the second Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.
You, dear athletes, will keep this Singapore Spirit alive in your countries as true role models.
I now declare the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore closed, and, in accordance with tradition, I call upon the Youth of the World to assemble in four years’ time in Nanjing, China, for the second Summer Youth Olympic Games.
Thank you.
